Running out of sidewalk space...

July 7, 1981 - LA Times:
"One of the Southern California's natural resources is slowly dwindling. The Hollywood Walk of Fame is expected to run out of sidewalk spaces for stars' names in about 60 years."

This was the report 25 years ago. When you think about it, there is only so much sidewalk they can place names on. Help Charlie Chaplin's leading lady, Edna Purviance, become one of them, by signing the petition today!

Charlie Chaplin Walk of Fame 'Drive'

While getting Edna Purviance a star on the Walk of Fame is a challenge, Charlie Chaplin Walk of Fame star was no cake walk. It took years before his star appeared on the Walk of Fame in Hollywood. Because of the anti-Chaplin feeling toward him in the states, his name wasn't listed on the original 500 name list for stars in the late 50s. Producer Stanley Kramer was the first star to be set in the sidewalk in 1960. That same year, Charles Chaplin Jr. sued the Hollywood Chamber because of his father's name omission.

A superior judge refused to issue an order "compelling" the Hollywood Chamber "to show cause why they should not be directed to included Charles Chaplin's name on the Walk of Fame". Letters did come in for support of Chaplin star being on the Walk of Fame, but others were not as supportive.

It would take several years and Chaplin's trip back to America, before this issue finally was resolved in the early 1970s. Even at that time, the vote was not fully supportive of Chaplin getting a star, but it did finally happen. Charles Chaplin Jr. who fought for his father's star died before the battle was won. He never got to see it...

Group List Names for Walk of Fame

The year was August 1957. The first list of names were gathered for the Hollywood Walk of Fame. These names were headed by: Cecil B. DeMille, Samuel Goldwyn, Jessie Lasky, Joe Schoenfeld, Hal Roach, Mack Sennett, Walter Lantz, Duke Wales and Walt Disney. The brass and terrazzo colored stars were first planned for 500 names in the film industry.

Chaplin's name was not on the 500 name list. Watch here for some reports on Charlie Chaplin's story on his star and other stories on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Help Edna Purviance get her star today. See links to right side for information and to sign the petition.
